Computing

Mrs Toth is the computing subject co-ordinator.

The national curriculum states that for Key Stage 1 pupils should be taught to:

  •   understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions

  •   create and debug simple programs

  •   use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs

  •   use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content

  •   recognise common uses of information technology beyond school

  •   use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.

At Briar Hill we cover these aspects in various ways from using a camera to take photographs to creating animations.

We endeavour to link the computing learning to the childrens learning another subjects.

An example of this is in year 2 children design and make a winding mechanism in their DT lessons.  This is then used in computing to create an animation of a monkey trying to get his bananas from the bottom  of the tree to the top.

Have a look at what year 2 from 2017 produced below.

In year 1 the children design and create a game based around traditional tales, their current topic. This allows them to create, test and debug a simple program.

We also have reception children using technology to support their learning.

Our school has regular Online safety learning for the children including taking part in Safer Internet Day each year. This is a national initiative to help keep all children safe when they are online.
