Inclusion

At Briar Hill Infant School we value the individuality of all of our children. We are committed to giving all our children every opportunity to achieve the highest of standards – regardless of their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment or background.

This section of our website about 'inclusion' is made up of the items found below. Please explore these pages for further information about how our school aims to offer excellence and choice to all our children through the removal of barriers to learning and participation.

The term 'special educational needs' has a legal definition, referring to children who have learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for them to learn than most children of the same age. It covers a wide range of needs - literacy, numeracy and other cognition, behavioural, social and emotional, communication and interaction and physical/sensory skills, including visual and hearing impairments.

Some of the children who join us at Briar Hill Infant School have already been in early education and their needs may have already been assessed. Other children on entry to school may be identified as being in need of extra support and assessments will be undertaken with parental permission.  This information is used to provide starting points for the development of an appropriate curriculum for all of our children.

Mrs Beeston is our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Co-ordinator (SENDCO) and our SEND policy  is currently under review in light of the  new SEND Code of Practice. The new policy will specify how we aim to ensure that the necessary provision is made for any pupil with SEND and that those needs are made known to all staff who are likely to work with them.
